The hardest part of any blanket isn’t the stitching, it’s picking the colors.
I’ve decided my next big project is a classic granny square blanket, and I’m already learning that color planning takes almost as long as the actual crocheting.
The plan
I’m going with a “scrappy” approach using a base neutral (oatmeal) with five accent colors rotated randomly through each square. This keeps things visually interesting without needing a strict repeating pattern.
Materials so far:
- Worsted weight cotton-acrylic blend yarn
- 5.0mm hook
- A growing pile of bobbins I’m already losing track of
Square structure
Each square is the standard 4-round granny square:
- Round 1: magic circle, 3 dc clusters, chain-2 corners
- Round 2: dc clusters in each corner and side, chain-2 corners
- Round 3 & 4: repeat, adding clusters along the sides
Once I have around 80 squares done, I’ll start laying them out on the floor to plan the final arrangement before joining.
Current progress
12 squares down, roughly 68 to go. I’ll post photos as the color pattern starts to take shape — right now it’s mostly yarn chaos.
